The COVID-19 pandemic has produced a staggering array of challenges that clinicians, public health experts, and policy makers are struggling to meet. Data scientists and quantitative experts across the globe have gone into overdrive as they work to analyze a flood of information, seeking not only to better understand, track, and predict the disease, but also to help guide the response to it and ensure that timely, accurate, and trustworthy information is readily available for everyone from scientists and clinicians to communities and members of the public.

Deep learning has emerged as a powerful approach to address complex problems in various fields, including biology. In this four-part series of vLEs, we will describe the theory and application of two deep learning models - the multiplayer perceptron and the convolutional neural network. As an example of their use in biology, we will demonstrate how to use these models to perform automated classification of blood cell images.

Duke+DataScience (+DS) is pleased to present a session on Tuesday, September 29, "COVID-19 and the Telehealth Transformation: Insights into MyChart using Natural Language Processing."

This session is open to all, and we especially encourage clinicians and members of the health system to join us, as well as students and learners interested in healthcare-facing applications.

Seven +DS learning experiences will be held in September. These sessions offer the opportunity to dive deeper into topics and target diverse units at Duke: from those that desire a broad understanding of what is possible with data science, and those who wish to use data-science tools (software) without a need for deep understanding of underlying methodology, to those who desire a rigorous technical proficiency of the details and methodology of data science. Anyone in the Duke community is welcome to join, there is no fee to attend, and no prior experience is necessary.
